Screening for Cardiovascular Disease Risk Using Traditional Risk Factor Assessment or Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring

TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

In this study, individuals at elevated risk for cardiovascular disease were randomized to screening arm A (n = 14,478; the Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation [SCORE] model) or B (n = 14,450; coronary artery calcium [CAC] scoring).

SCORE screening identified 45.1% at low risk, 26.5% at intermediate risk, and 28.4% at high risk, whereas CAC screening identified 76.0% at low risk, 15.1% at high risk, and 8.9% at very high risk.

These results demonstrate that CAC scoring significantly reduces the number of individuals classified as requiring preventive treatment compared with SCORE screening.
